Classification of viruses known only from metagenomic data

I read a 2017 consensus statement at "Nature reviews on microbiology" by Simmonds et al. arguing that uncultured viruses should be incorporated into the official classification scheme by the ICTV. Does anyone knows if this proposal has already been accepted by the ICTV? Thanks

  • Yes, the taxonomic classification of uncultured viruses detected as a result of metagenomic sequencing has been endorsed by the Executive Committee of the ICTV. The requirements for classification and preparation of proposals will generally follow the guidelines discussed in the Nature Reviews Microbiology publication, "Virus taxonomy in the age of metagenomics".
