Distinguishing features

The genus is distinguished on the basis of genetic characters.



No details are available on the morphology of virions.

Nucleic acid

Genome (Sasaki et al., 2015, Yinda et al., 2017): 7,085–7,321 nt (5′-UTR: c. 517 nt; ORF: 6,510–6,519 nt; 3′-UTR: >58–294 nt). The location of the cre has not been identified.

The deduced polyprotein is c. 2,170 amino acids. There is no L protein. The 1AB protein remains uncleaved.


No virus has been isolated. Viral RNA was detected in faeces and intestinal contents, respectively, of wild shrews in Zambia and fruit bats (Eidolon helvum) in Cameroon. 

Derivation of names

Crohivirus: from Crocidura hirta (the lesser red musk shrew from which the first strain was isolated)

Members of a species of the genus Crohivirus:

  • share a common genome organization
  • are less than 55% divergent in polyprotein aa sequence
  • are less than 60% divergent in P1 aa sequence
  • are less than 50% divergent in 2C + 3CD aa sequence
